Much of Britain found itself under ice in the relatively recent (in geological terms) past.
While the English Lakes are often cited as examples of great glacial scenery, Snowdonia boasts many fine areas of stunning landscapes left over from the last retreat of ice - and are often quite similar to the glacial landscapes of the Lake District
While we all remember the U-shaped valleys of our geography lessons, even areas that were not buried under mile-high glaciers - such as the south of England, experienced conditions that we would call 'Siberian' today. The Sarsen sandstones that were used at Stonehenge, owe their formation to these kinds of conditions.
